URINATION"URGENCY"

An "Urgent" Feeling of Urination Can be a Symptom of Cancer of the Bladder

Hematuria, or blood in the urine, is the most common symptom of bladder cancer. Usually painless, hematuria is the first symptom in about 80 percent of people who develop bladder cancer. The amount of blood does not indicate the size of the tumor, or the extent of the disease. In addition, blood may be seen in the urine one day, and disappear the next. In fact, the urine may be clear for several weeks before the blood reappears. Bladder cancer may sometimes cause other symptoms, such as increased frequency of urination, pain during urination (with or without hematuria), or a feeling of urgency. In rare cases, bladder cancer results in retention of uring or incontinence. Often bladder tumors cause no symptoms. In these cases, they may be revealed during a routine physical examination by the presence of microscopic amounts of blood in urine samples taken for various tests. Having these symptoms does not necessarily mean bladder cancer is present. They may also may signal conditions such as an infection, a benign tumor, or bladder stones. In any case they should always be evaluated by a physician. A medical examination is the only way to find out whether cancer is present.
